redsn0w 0.9.6beta5 Out – Tethered Jailbreak for 4.2.1 on Older Devices
redsn0w 0.9.6beta4 was just recently announced, and beta5 is now out giving both Windows and OSX users the ability to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS. (why?).
This release jailbreaks iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. It also assists 3G and 3G[S] users with baseband 05.14 or 05.15 who have been stuck without an unlock upgrade their baseband to 06.15 in order to use the new ultrasn0w which was just released. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU NEED TO. More on that here.
A much upgraded Cydia is also included in this release, which we’ll be writing a full story on in the morning – a ton of great improvements thanks to saurik and chpwn.
Ultrasn0w 1.2 Out – Unlocks “Stuck” iPhone 3G/3GS
The DevTeam has released ultrasn0w 1.2 – with a clever feature for those of you who’ve had an iPhone 3G or 3G[S] with a baseband later than 05.13.04.
| It turns out that the very first iPad firmware 3.2.2 has baseband version 06.15.00 still vulnerable to AT+XAPP. The iPad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS — they’re fully compatible! |
UltraSn0w Fully Working on iOS 4.2.1, Unlock Coming Sunday
We confirmed the unlock being released on Sunday/Tomorrow but sometimes things don’t go as planned and get set back. In this case no set backs as Musclenerd tweeted that the iOS 4.2.1 unlock is 100% fully working on the firmware.
Ultrasn0w Unlock For iPhone 3G/3GS on iOS 4.2.1 Comming This Sunday
There is some good news and some bad news for iPhone unlockers. The good news is that all iPhone 3G and 3GS users can unlock their iPhones on any firmware/iOS and on any baseband this Sunday. MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team confirmed this from his Twitter. Here’s what he had to say:
“Good progress today…everything is on track for updated ultrasn0w by Sunday/Funday at the latest (longer for iPhone4!)”
[How To] Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1
The iPhone Dev team has updated Redsn0w to jailbreak the latest iOS 4.2.1 firmware for all iDevices. Before you continue you must know that for the newer gen devices such as 3GS new bootrom, etc, etc, you will have a semi untethered jailbreak.
A semi untethered jailbreak means if your iphone goes dead or if you install a cydia tweak that requires you to reboot you will need a computer to be able to launch jailbreak apps. This isn’t completely tethered like people think. Semi untethered allows you to reboot without a computer fine but you won’t be able to use jailbreak apps as they will keep crashing until you reboot with a computer and run redsn0w to boot up.
GreenPois0n Will be Updated to Jailbreak the iOS4.2.1 Firmware In A Few Days
Just a few hours ago iPhone Hacker P0sixninja has posted a tweet stating that the GreenPois0n jailbreaking tool will be released within a few days to jailbreak the iOS4.2.1 firmware. Unfortunately just like the Dev-Team stated about their jailbreak they are working on, this jailbreak will be tethered or semi-tethered for newer A4 iDevices! Meaning that everytime you need to reboot your iDevice, you will need to re-connect the iDevice to your computer and re-run the jailbreaking tool you used to jailbreak your iDevice. As the Dev-team told us, the jailbreak will become untethered once Comex ports his exploit to the iOS4.2.1 firmware.
iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak and Unlock Updates
We’re basically just passing on some info here, but the iPhone Dev Team have updated their blog to let us all know what’s going on with the latest jailbreak and unlock. Basically, older devices are good to go, for jailbreaking. Newer devices are tethered only, for the time being. An untethered jailbreak for the “A4″ devices is in the works. All devices that need unlocking should stay away from iOS 4.2.1, until Ultrasn0w is updated.
PwnageTool Updated To Version 4.1.2: No More Cydia Errors
The iPhone Dev-Team has updated PwnageTool to version 4.1.2 for Mac OS X which should ideally fix any issues that OS X 10.5.x users were noticing. PwnageTool is a multi-device jailbreak tool that allows you to cook a custom firmware to restore via iTunes. This is useful for those who need their iPhones unlocked, as PwnageTool preserves your baseband so that you can still use Ultrasn0w to unlock, even on the latest iOS/firmware.
[Update: Version 4.1.2 should fix any issues that OS X 10.5.x users were seeing. You only need to run this version if you’re at OS X 10.5.x and were seeing Cydia errors]

[How To] Install OpeniBoot From Userland using Bootlace 2.1
Trying to install other operating systems on the iPhone has been going on since the iPhone was introduced, years ago. Planetbeing, of The iPhone Dev Team has been working on this for a while, trying to port Linux to the iPhone. Since then, he has successfully had the Android OS running on the iPhone, but the process to get it on there, has been clumsy.
iPhodroid offered a simple tool for your computer, to install OpeniBoot and iDroid on your device, and they have done great work to make it easy for every one to try out Android on their iOS device. As of Oct, 2010, this is now open source.
Now, we have an even simpler way to do this. cpich3g of the iPhone Dev Team has helped with the release of Bootlace 2.1, which will install OpeniBoot from userland. This means you no longer need a computer! You just download the package from Cydia, and install!
